Wednesday, February 18. 2009God of This CityMarch 28 at 7pm We don’t get Easter. We want to...but bunnies and new dresses and Cadbury eggs get in the way. So we end up thinking that Easter is about this great miracle God did before getting out of that line of work. Or we think that Easter is about this really fabulous life that we don’t get to live until we die. Either way, if this is all there is to Easter than maybe it really doesn’t get any better than hunting for plastic eggs and hoping we don’t get the eggs filled with Tootsie Rolls. See, here’s what we need – we need help to get our hearts and minds around the real Easter. We need to hear that God’s new world has been introduced in Jesus Christ and that we’re invited to belong to it. We need to see that the resurrection involved a real earthly body - and that means that the power of Easter to transform and heal Oconee and Athens and the UGA campus must be applied to the major problems in our community and the smallest details of our Tuesday afternoons. So we’ve created this night of music called ‘God of This City.’ Because the Christian life isn’t about trying as hard as we can to be good but learning to live in the new world created by Easter. Nursery will be provided:details to come about what ages will be provided for. The set list will be posted soon. Show up on time this will be a special night leading up to Easter. Please invite anyone and everyone. Wednesday, January 21. 2009Mark Your CalendarMark your calendars for April 18th. This will be our 'Community Service Day'. More details to come. Wednesday, January 21. 2009Advent Conspiracy Final NumbersThis Christmas season we partnered with 'Food For Kids' and changed where we spent the money we would normally spend on Christmas gifts. The program 'Food For Kids' provides food for kids, during the weekend, that would not have otherwise have food when they are not at school. Our church raised $3899. What a great step this is for us in serving and loving our community. Monday, December 1. 2008Advent ConspiracyIt starts with Jesus. It ends with Jesus. This is the holistic approach God had in mind for Christmas. It’s a season where we are called to put down our burdens and lift a song up to our God. It’s a season where love wins, peace reigns, and a king is celebrated with each breath. It’s the party of the year. Entering the story of advent means entering this season with an overwhelming passion to worship Jesus to the fullest. [ SPEND LESS ] Before you think we’re going all Scrooge on you, keep reading. How often have you spent money on Christmas presents for no other reason than obligation? How many times have you received a gift out of that same obligation? Thanks, but no thanks, right? We’re asking people to consider spending less this Christmas (maybe buying one less gift-just one). Sounds insignificant, yet many who have taken this small sacrifice have experienced something nothing less than a miracle: They have been more available to celebrate Christ during the advent season. [ GIVE MORE ] God’s gift to us was a relationship built on love. So it’s no wonder why we’re drawn to the idea that Christmas should be a time to love our friends and family in the most memorable ways possible. Time is the real gift Christmas offers us, and no matter how hard we look, it can’t be found at the mall. Time to make a gift that turns into the next family heirloom. Time to write mom a letter. Time to take the kids sledding. Time to bake really good cookies and sing really bad Christmas carols. Time to make love visible through relational giving. Sounds a lot better than getting a sweater two sizes too big, right? [ LOVE ALL ] When Jesus loved, He loved in ways never imagined before. Though rich, he became poor to love the poor, the forgotten, the overlooked and the sick. He played to the margins. By spending less at Christmas we have the opportunity to join Him in giving resources to those who need help the most. When Advent Conspiracy first began four churches challenged this simple concept to its congregations. The result raised more than a half million dollars to aid those in need. So, this isn’t a theory based on good intentions. It’s a movement that’s saving lives. This past Sunday we had another Church planter in to share with us what is going on with them and their churches journey. Check out their blog here. Also listen to the interview here.
I want to post a couple of things that we can be praying for his family and church: Family: they are expecting baby who is a bit undersized and doctors are a little worried. Pray for them as they anticipate these life changes with the expectation of a child. Church: For another staff member to come along side of them for partnership and someone else join in the mission of Ridge Church to change Knoxville and the world. This past Sunday Matt interviewed Gordon Duncan, pastor of Sovereign King Church in Garner, NC (http://www.sovereignkingpca.net).
I wanted to post a couple request he asked us to pray for him, his family and his church. Family: That they would have physical and spiritual rest while they are on vacation together. Church: That God would meet their financial needs and that they would continue to see God grow their congregation. It was very encouraging to hear from another church trying to do similar things in their community that we are. Please remember Gordon Duncan, his family and Sovereign King Church in your prayers this week. For the audio of the interview please click here. |
